Man arrested after house fire leaves two people needing hospital treatment

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a house fire left two people in hospital.

Firefighters were called out in the early hours of yesterday morning after a blaze in Waller Terrace, Houghton.

Two people were taken to Sunderland Royal Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation. They have since been discharged.

The Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service informed police after the incident, which happened shortly after midnight.

A 45-yer-old man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent. He has been released on police bail.
