A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm that the fire at a commercial property on Villiers Street in Sunderland has been extinguished.

“At the height of the fire up to 30 firefighters had been tackling the blaze. Hendon Road has now been reopened to vehicles, however the streets in the immediate vicinity of the building will remain closed for a prolonged period of time.

“The buildings have been damaged by the fire, and further investigations will take place between the service and the police.

“We would like to extend our gratitude to everyone who has worked with us throughout this incident, including our TWFRS colleagues and local partners.

“Our crews left the scene at 2.08 pm.”
