Marc Mallaby had a collection of 629 pictures and movies, featuring children as young as seven, and three extreme pornography images of women committing sex acts with dogs.
Newcastle Crown Court heard the 37-year-old had been out when police went to his home in April 2019 but he then turned up at the police station voluntarily.

Mallaby, of Cricklewood Road, Hylton Castle, Sunderland, admitted three offences of making indecent images of children and one of possessing extreme pornography.
Tony Davis, defending, said: "He is not sexually attracted to adults and finds it very difficult to have a normal life as a result of this."
Mr Davis said Mallaby, who has never been in trouble before, is in employment but is also primary carer for his father.
Judge Sarah Mallett said Mallaby is a "solitary and socially awkward individual" who has now taken steps to address his problems and has a good prospect of rehabiliation.
Mallaby was sentenced to 10 months imprisonment suspended for 18 months with rehabilitation requirements and 150 hours unpaid work.
