If you fancy taking a bite out of some great independent cafes and restaurants this year, we’ve rounded up some of the best the city has to offer, from new faces to Sunderland stalwarts.
1. Borneo Bistro, Hylton Road
After more than a year of renovation works, Borneo Bistro reopened its doors in 2019 following a devastating fire. Now it's back open and serving up a global melting pot of flavours with dishes such as Taiwanese braised pork and Filipino pork adobo. Photo: Stu Norton
2. Cole Coffee & Deli, St George's Terrace, Roker
A charming coffee shop and cafe in a former house in Roker, Cole is a little off the beaten track but definitely worth a visit. As well as coffee to warm you up after a walk along the beach, you can pick up some great home-made cakes, soups and more. Look out for their wine tasting nights too. Photo: Katy Wheeler
3. Mexico 70, High Street West, city centre
One of the city's best restaurants, Mexico 70 combines well made fusion tacos with quirky interiors and a top playlist. Make sure to try their guest cocktails including the incredibly moreish watermelon margaritas. Photo: Stu Norton
4. Tosca, Derwent Street, city centre
One of the longest-running restaurants in Sunderland, Tosca has been serving up authentic Italian cuisine for more than 30 years. It's run by an Italian family who are on first name terms with many of their loyal customers. Photo: Stu Norton
