And today, we raise a toast to some of the Sunderland pubs which still remain in the memory of many people.
Watch out for many more reminders of Wearside hostelries in the weeks to come.
In the meantime, let’s get the pints in as we look back on some former favourites.
1. Prospect pub, Durham Road
The Prospect pub on Durham Road, pictured here in 2006, will always have a special place in the hearts of Wearside people. It’s one of the many vantage points that pepole used to watch the FA Cup come home in 1973.
A previous Echo story also told how people had memories of games of pool and dominoes in the backroom, wedding parties and other functions. Photo: CA Sunderland Echo
2. Ford Hotel

3. Brogans
Two years ago, a Sunderland Echo social media post about Brogans attracted interest from 51,000 people. They reminisced on its great meals such as curry and chips, hot beef sandwiches and tasty Sunday roasts. Do you remember it? Email [email protected]. Photo: PB Sunderland Echo
4. The Old Twenty Nine
This former High Street West favourite has previously been described by Echo followers as a proper rock pub and 'very distinctive'.
Two years ago, we gauged public opinion on the 70s favourite and people said it attracted great bands such as She, Groundhogs, and the Toy Dolls. Photo: Sunderland Echo
