Four people test positive for coronavirus in North East as one adult diagnosed on Tyneside

One adult has tested positive for Covid-19 in North Tyneside and is self-isolating at home, Public Health England have confirmed.
It is the first case of coronavirus in North Tyneside, which comes after three people have been diagnosed with the condition in Newcastle.

Hide AdThere are no confirmed cases in County Durham, South Tyneside, Northumberland or Hartlepool, as of Sunday, March 8.
The patient's close contacts will receive advice from the public health authority.
The Public Health team at Sunderland City Council confirmed that a person who has tested positive for the disease in the region works at a business in Sunderland.

Hide AdGillian Gibson, Director of Public Health at Sunderland City Council said: "We are aware that a person confirmed as having coronavirus in the region is employed in a Sunderland business. However, there is no requirement for further public health action at this stage.
"The risk to people in Sunderland is currently low. The best way anyone can protect themselves and others from the virus is to wash their hands thoroughly and regularly with soap and water, or use a hand sanitiser, and to cough or sneeze into a tissue, bin it and then wash their hands. If anyone thinks they have symptoms they should contact the NHS 111 line rather than go to their GP or a hospital.”
A daily update of figures on its website said: “As of 9am on March 8, 2020, a total of 23,513 people have been tested of which 23,240 were confirmed negative and 273 confirmed as positive.
“Two patients who tested positive for for COVID-19 have died.”
