The Shakers were expelled from League One at the start of the 2019/20 season after long-standing financial issues came to the fore.

Hide AdBury were late paying a number of clubs whom they owed transfer fees, loan wages and ticket sale proceeds - with the EFL having to step in on several occasions and deduct money from their Basic Award payments.
Basic Award payments are the sums given to EFL clubs by the governing body each season.
And the Echo can reveal that three of the payments Bury failed to make were to Sunderland AFC.
The first came in 2013, where a sum of £1,707.00 failed to be paid as a contribution towards loan wages for Trevor Carson.

Later that year, a sum of £5,795.30 was also not paid to the Black Cats - although the reason for this payment has been redacted in the EFL report.
Bury missed payments to several clubs over the four-year period, with these incidents contributing to the club’s sad demise.
